ESG, a novel endoscopic bariatric procedure, presents comparable safety and efficacy to the established surgical technique of sleeve gastrectomy (SG). A study is undertaken to evaluate the short-term safety of ESG procedures in cases assisted by postgraduate medical trainees.
Over 2000 patient records from the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) database, collected between 2016 and 2020, were subject to a retrospective analysis. Cases of ESG, in which postgraduate medical trainees (residents and fellows) participated, were propensity matched (11) to ESG cases performed without the assistance of these trainees.
