We surveyed all the articles published in four major international journals on medical education during the first 5 months of 2008 and searched for terminology that might prove obscure or confusing to an international readership.\n\nResults\n\nWe found that many of the articles surveyed included terminology, contextual descriptions, acronyms and titles that assumed a shared understanding of setting between authors and readers. “In mixed-culture microbial fuel cells (MFCs), exoelectrogens and other microorganisms compete for substrate. It has previously been assumed that substrate losses to other terminal
electron acceptors over a fed-batch cycle, such as dissolved oxygen, are constant. However, a constant rate of substrate loss would only explain small increases in coulombic efficiencies (CEs, the fraction of substrate recovered as electrical current) with shorter cycle times, but not the large Dehydrogenase inhibitor increases in CE that are usually observed with higher current
densities and reduced cycle times. To better understand changes in CEs, COD concentrations were measured over time in fed-batch, single-chamber, air-cathode MFCs at different current densities (external resistances). COD degradation rates were all found to be first-order with respect to COD concentration, even under open circuit conditions with no current generation (first-order rate constant of 0.14 +/- 0.01 h(-1)). The rate of COD removal increased learn more when there was current generation, with the highest rate constant (0.33 +/- 0.02 h(-1)) obtained at the lowest external resistance (100 Omega). Therefore, as the substrate concentration was reduced more quickly due to current generation, the rate of loss of substrate to non-exoelectrogens decreased due to this first-order substrate-concentration dependence. As a result, coulombic efficiencies rapidly increased due to decreased, and not constant, removal rates of substrate by non-exoelectrogens. These results show that higher current densities (lower resistances) redirect a greater percentage of substrate into current generation, enabling large increase in CEs with increased current densities. As such, it maintains homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS). In many CNS disorders, BBB integrity is compromised. GC treatment has been demonstrated
to improve the tightness of the BBB. The responses and effects of GCs are mediated by the ubiquitous GC receptor (GR). Ligand-bound GR recognizes and binds to the GC response element located within the promoter region of target genes. Transactivation of certain target genes leads to improved barrier properties of endothelial cells. In this review, we deal with the role of GCs in endothelial cell barrier function. First, we describe the mechanisms of GC action at the molecular level. Next, we discuss the regulation of the BBB by GCs, with emphasis on genes targeted by GCs such as occludin, claudins and VE-cadherin. Finally, we present currently available GC therapeutic strategies and their limitations.
“This study describes an innovative experimentally induced model of intervertebral disc degeneration. This innovative approach is based on the induction of extracellular matrix disorders in the intervertebral disc (IVD) using a diode laser. BTSA1 For this study, 15 one-year-old and five 30-month-old New Zealand White rabbits were used. Two procedures were tested to trigger IVD degeneration: needle aspiration (reference technique) and a laser approach. The IVD degeneration process
was assessed 20, 40, 60, 90 and 120 days after surgery by X-ray radiography (IVD height), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (T2 intensity of IVD signal) and histological analysis using modified Boos’ scoring. Our data indicate that a marked IVD degeneration was found compared with sham-operated animals regardless of the procedure tested. A significant decrease in disc height on X-ray radiographs was first demonstrated. In addition, MRI disc signals were significantly reduced in
both groups. Finally, a statistically significant increase in Boos’ scoring was found in both laser and aspiration-induced IVD degeneration. Interestingly, IVD degeneration induced by laser treatment was more progressive compared with aspiration. Moreover, the histological results indicated that laser-induced disc degeneration was quite similar to that obtained during the natural aging process as observed in 30-month-old rabbits. The genealogic tree of the 162,202 bp multidrug-resistant conjugative plasmid shows that it is a chimera of transposons and integrative conjugative elements from various bacterial origins, resembling a rhizome.
